EL SEGUNDO
After watching the reserves lose their grip on a 25-point lead last Tuesday, Phil Jackson laid part of their problem at the feet of Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum.
The coach said that neither player showed “leadership” when they were on the court with the second unit. Perhaps spurred by Jackson’s verbal disappointment, Odom said he and Bynum spoke to the reserves after the game and their “speech” got a little heated.
“We always tell the second group that when we have games where we go up 15-20 points, it’s important that Kobe (Bryant) and Pau (Gasol) and Derek (Fisher) to stay out of the game. It’s important for us mentally to play well.
“We talked right after the game was over. It (emotions) were still volatile, but generally the point got across.”
Seeing will be believing.
Hard to believe this will become much of an issue, especially if Bynum returns to spend the bulk of his time with the starters. Besides, Bynum’s attitude has never been one of “leadership.” It seems to be a Me-First ‘tude with him.
