Lakers four-point competition: Kobe 7, Sasha 6, Fish 5

November 15th, 2009, 7:46 am · 3 Comments · posted by KEVIN DING, OCREGISTER.COM

Maria Sharapova was seen at the Lakers-Hornets game last Sunday, and Sasha Vujacic canned a 3-pointer plus a free throw on one play in the late going. A few days later, I asked Vujacic if she had an idea of how difficult and unlikely it was to produce a four-point play. He smiled.

Vujacic has six of the 23 four-point plays in Lakers regular-season history, actually … which is a testament to his shooting skill and how much opponents want to decapitate him while he’s shooting. Vujacic now trails Kobe Bryant by just one for most in regular-season history (Bryant has three more in postseason play) and leads Derek Fisher by one.

So there you go: a blog post blending the off-court Lakers intrigue with actual basketball information. It’s not easy to do, but it’s our goal here to cover both bases!

By the way, did you make it to Ron Artest’s birthday party Saturday night? Artest tweeted to his followers who were going to show up that he wouldn’t arrive, personally, until 11:30 p.m. or midnight. We’ll see if there is any hangover in Artest vs. Trevor Ariza II.

The starters may be excused for their pathetic performance against Denver but not the bench. They average less than 10 minutes a game! So how can back to back games be an excuse for them. They could not make wide open 6, 15, 20 or 3-point open shots. Compare them with Celtics, Denver, Portland & Spur benches. They did not play energetic or smart defense…Walton, Farmar, Sasha show up once in five games. Perhaps Farmar & Sasha prefer a Golden State, Phoenix, New York or Hornets type offense. An even trade for a point guard and a shooting guard that can shoot 60% on wide open shots and play defense is urgently needed! For long range strategy keep the door open for Chris Paul as a Laker point guard for half the Laker bench and $20-30 million cash (which Chris would pay back in a year from added gate and TV revenue & at least four more championships playing beside Kobe & current starters)! Chris Paul can take over from Derek Fisher as starter next year with Byron Scott as assistant coach until Phil Jackson retires. That would be a smart transition plan.

By the way Todd’s suggestion: “After this championship or next Lakers may better without him. A 35 year old Kobe Bryant taking more shots than a 26 yr old Bynum is not something to look forward too”, is foolish at best and ridiculous when all Kobe’s bench teamates cannot shoot wide open shots at all ranges and are mentally and physically tired after averaging 10 minutes a game???

Fish could have tied Sasha with six after Nash fouled him, but Fish missed the FT.
Did he miss in anticipation of tying Sasha?
Of course LO followed with a put-back for an old fashioned 5 point play.
Did you see Nash taunt the Ref with a you need glasses gesture?
Low class, disrespectful and rude to the lady ref, no? At least worthy of a fine.

I don’t blame the Lakers, I blame the officials for swallowing their whistles for that game. Embarassing display and made me miss the replacement refs.
