LOS ANGELES — Phil Jackson was asked if Pau Gasol’s heavy summer workload in recent years with the Spanish national team means Gasol is vulnerable to injury going forward. Gasol already has missed most of training camp and the start of the season because of a strained right hamstring that he suspects came about because he was overworked.
“No, I’m not worried,” Jackson said.
Jackson just smiled and then added: “He’s going to be fine.”
Gasol wasn’t on the active roster Sunday night against New Orleans. Andrew Bynum (elbow) was, reflective of how Bynum’s condition is less serious than Gasol’s.
The Lakers have three days coming up without a game to get Bynum and Gasol healthy, and they might be ready to play Thursday night at home against Phoenix. The Suns, however, are back to their small-ball ways and using Channing Frye as a long-range-shooting center, so there might not be as much need for Bynum and Gasol.
After over a month of rest from the injury he should be fine. The rest of his body is getting the chance to rest while his hammy is healing. On top of that, with every game he misses is one less game he has to be ready for.
