Gasol might return in Oklahoma City or Houston

LOS ANGELES — Pau Gasol will be with the Lakers for their games in Oklahoma City on Tuesday and Houston on Wednesday, so it’s possible he could make his season debut in one of those locales.

“We are close enough that he should be doing some work on the trip,” Phil Jackson said.

It remains more likely, however, that Gasol will just be rehabbing his strained right hamstring than helping the Lakers beat the Thunder and Rockets. Gasol said he isn’t targeting any game to return.

Gasol did allow that it’s possible his heavy workload between the past three Lakers seasons and his summer play for Spain contributed to the first hamstring injury of his career.

“Maybe,” he said. “Been a couple years I put my body through a lot of work. Maybe that had something to do with it.”

Gasol said he is surprised by how long he has been out, noting that he actually stayed on the court and finished the practice weeks ago when he initially hurt the hamstring.

I’m already assuming he won’t play for another week. No big deal. Lakers should be ok. No heavy hitters coming up on the schedule.

Encouraging that Gasol will be on the trip, rather than left at home. I look at it as a measure of progress. There is no way Dr. Lombardo or Gary Vitti let Gasol come back too soon.

He could definitely use the rest. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, after the summer he had, this injury is a blessing in disguise for him.
