Kupchak not hopeful of getting Odom

July 13th, 2009, 6:52 pm · 20 Comments · posted by JANIS CARR, OCREGISTER.COM

LAS VEGAS

Forget all that good vibe about Lamar Odom re-signing with the Lakers. Mitch Kupchak’s gut feeling is that it won’t happen.

Kupchak said Monday he was “not as hopeful” of reaching a deal with Odom as he was last week. He said that the Lakers and Odom’s representative, agent Jeff Schwartz, “are not on the same page” and there are no further talks planned.

The Lakers were believed to have offered Odom $8 million-plus, but Odom has been seeking at least $10 million.

“I understand it’s a business, but I’m suprised it has taken this long to get to this point,” he said at halftime of the Lakers-Clippers Summer League game.

    ouch. That hurts

  • david says:

If he’s balking at 8, then the agent must have something under his sleeve.

  • Icaros says:

“Not hopeful,” your headline, is quite a bit different from “not as hopeful,” the quote you have attributed to Kupchak.

Also, did he literally tell you his “gut feeling is that it won’t happen,” or are those your words? If he actually said that you should really put it in quotes.

  • ramil says:

oh it makes me sad but i’m still hopeful tho.

  • Bynum doesn't stink says:

He has to think Portland is going to offer him a contract .OKC isn’t going to use its money on Odom. No one other than Portland could offer him more than LA has.

  • 7r@cy says:

LA is the only team that can give Lamar what he wants, money and a ring. If we don’t resign Lamar, this team takes a step back, even with RonRon. So both the FO and LO need to do whatever to get this deal done.

  • TR says:

I’m and avid Lakers fan and I say good riddance!!!

Enough of Odom already. He’s like the Sarah Palin of basketball. He’s also inconsistent. I can remember during the season some of the same people who are worried he wont sign wanted him shipped out. I think Kupchak should just sign someone who would love to wear the Purple and Gold (Amare) and move on, this is becoming quite boring.

If he cant make ends meet at 8.5 mil per year then let the doorknob hit cha!

  • willie210 says:

I guess I just don’t know the difference between 8 and 10 million. What about winning and getting the extra money in endorsements that come from playing for the Lakers?

  • Lionhead21 says:

    Good riddance I say!

No one individual is indispensable and no one should hold a team hostage.

Kupchak is a fool for letting this drag on so long that he now has zero chances of getting someone of quality

If nobody offers Odom $10 M, and he tries to come back, Lakers should offer him $5 m or less.

Consider that barely a year ago everybody wanted to trade him. If he gets his big long term contract what’s to say he will not revert to the Odom of old.

Last year was a contract year. You think Odom doesn’t know that!!

Sometimes I think pro sports managers have pea sized brains!!

  • Juni Long says:

There are people losing their jobs and homes and this greedy selfish man wants to squeeze another 2 million per year out of the Lakers, 8 m is not enough !!

Ultimately we the fans contribute through higher ticket, parking and concession prices etc etc

    Don’t pay him Dr Buss!!

    Don’t pay him Dr Buss

  • Robert says:

F U CANDYMAN! ANOTHER GREEDY ATHLETE IF HE BALKS AT 8 MILLION! GET HIS LAZY ASS OUT OF L.A. THE DUDE SHOWS UP EVERY 4TH GAME ANYWAY.

  • kelcey says:

odom adds a lot of much needed depth to our team.. but if 8. watever million isn’t enough for the candy man then we need to shop around for another forward to come play off the bench

  • moe howard says:

When a player says it is not about the money it is always about the money. Whatever the lakers offer him they will have to pay double with the salary cap tax, so it is not 8 million a year they will pay Odom it is 16 million a year it will cost the buss family. If the lakers did not have odom last year there would have been no championship. Any way thanks for the memorys lamar and good luck.

  • Niko says:

    There’s a new spin to this…..

Dallas is now in need of a power forward, I heard an interview with Mark Cuban and he stated they will go after Lamar Odom now that Orlando retained their big guy.

Lamar’s agent knows he can very easily go to the Mavericks and contend for a title there.

    Let the hard ball begin!!!

    • urdoo says:

This whole idea of Dallas being “contenders” next year is hilarious. Sure they might win a round, but they have no shot of beating the Lakers in a 7 game series.

  • Mike says:

Still, Dallas can only sign him to the mid-level, right? So if Odom wants more than 6 mil a year, he’d need to work a sign-and-trade. Dallas has nothing that the Lakers want, so I’d say screw him.

This trend of agents lately saying “if you don’t give me what I want, I’m taking my client somewhere else for less!” is such a crock. Nobody wins least of all the player.

  • Niko says:

    Urdoo-

If Dallas gets LO you can’t tell me they won’t be contender.

    Jason Kidd
    Shawn Marion
    Dirk Nowitzki
    Lamar Odom
    Josh Howard
    Jason Terry

That mix alone would make it interesting, if Cuban would sign Lamar!

  • Dave says:

Mitch Kupchak better not screw this up

  • Charles in Peoria, AZ says:

I don’t see that potential Dallas lineup with Lamar on it as a serious contender. Anything’s possible, but there would be too many similar players, too much overlap. If Marion is not out there doing all the things he’s good at, he sometimes disappears (especially in the playoffs). I don’t think Howard is long for that team, they’ve tired of his injuries, antics, and questionable decision-making.

  • hapdawg says:

Odom’s agent is pushing this 10 mil deal. He’s trying to be a hard ass agent thinking he’s gonna succeed unlike Ariza’s agent. Well, good luck Odom. You witnessed what happened to Ariza. Agent will make you and agent will break you and you will have to deal with whatever is dealt to you whether you like it or not.
