If Jameer Nelson had drunk more milk as a kid, then maybe he’d be taller, and then maybe Derek Fisher would’ve missed …

ORLANDO, Fla. — Neither the Lakers nor the Magic held practice Friday, so there wasn’t a lot new to discuss. That’s still no excuse for just about everybody in this city, including the supposedly better-informed print journalists, to say the same stupid thing over and over:

If Courtney Lee had made that layup late in Game 2 and Dwight Howard had made a free throw late in Game 4, the Magic would be ahead, 3-1, instead of the Lakers.

This is not how it works in the real world. If Lee had made that layup and Orlando had won Game 2 to even the series, the teams then have totally different mindsets and plans heading into Game 3. Maybe the angrier Lakers win Game 3. Maybe they then lose Game 4. Who knows? It’s ludicrous to draw supposition about Game 4 in any way if you’re going to change the outcome of Game 2.

I hate it when people do this kind of thing, because it’s just totally out of touch with reality. Hypothetical situations are a lot of fun to discuss, even if doing so is not particularly productive regarding what’s truly at hand, but taking a hypothetical (Lee’s basket) and then adding another on top of it (Howard’s free throws) is just way too far down a fanciful road.

Shut up, already. What a waste of time. It’s not relevant to where this series stands in any way.

So funny, because I just read a quote by Tim Legler along those lines on today’s Daily Dime. Why have so many reporters and analysts become so nutty?

  • Alex says:

Thank you! So many what Ifs, with one if changing another If and so on.

    thanks Kev,

I’ve had enough of the “what if’s” or “Had they done this”s

    Well put Kevin.

  • Charles in AZ says:

Well now, what if Garnett were healthy, then Orlando would be on vacation. But then, if the Celtics had gotten that draft pick for Duncan, Garnett would be elsewhere, maybe with LeBron, and the Cavs would be in the Finals, right?

I’m glad someone finally said it. Enough of this arbitrary “what-if” passing of time. It’s much harder to think of something original and interesting to talk about. The fact is, the Lakers need just one more win to put this series and this season to rest.
