INDIANAPOLIS — Sun Yue joined the Lakers here for this three-game trip to Indiana, Philadelphia and Washington after diagnostic tests showed no major damage in his sprained left foot.

What has Sun’s value to the team been this season, beyond picking up and carrying stuff as rookies are unofficially mandated to do? Phil Jackson likes having him with the team instead of the D-Fenders for full-court practice purposes when they go 5-on-5. The Lakers have 14 players on the roster, so they need at least 10 for that.

“It’s almost a perfect setup because Fish and Kobe and Pau sit out of practice, and we still have 11 guys or 10 guys practicing and playing full court,” Jackson said, referring to veterans Derek Fisher, Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol. “So you learn from that.”

Sun is inactive again tonight against the Pacers, but center Chris Mihm (ankle) will be back on the active roster.
