Karl makes decision

November 6th, 2008, 12:52 pm · Post a Comment · posted by ART THOMPSON III, OCREGISTER.COM

It appears as though guard Coby Karl, after weighing all of his options, has decided to suit up for the Idaho Stampede of the NBA’s developmental league.

According to Karl’s father, Denver Nuggets coach George Karl, the younger Karl had contemplated going overseas to play. However, that would have jeopardized his chance of perhaps getting a call from a NBA team, if hypothetically a roster spot opened up.

Coby already has a commitment from his father to be signed by the Nuggets to a 10-day contract, when those deals can be made, starting Jan. 5.

Coby Karl was the Lakers’ final cut in training camp and was a victim of the basketball staff’s decision to keep only 14 players, one under the allowable NBA regular-season maximum.

Coach Karl said his son spent two days with him, following being waived by the Lakers.

Coby Karl, whom the Lakers signed as an undrafted free agent rookie in the summer of 2007, split the 2007-2008 season with the Lakers and their D-League affiliate, the Los Angeles Defenders. Karl averaged 1.8 points, in 17 games with the Lakers, and 17.5 points, in 17 games with the Defenders.

If nothing else, Karl proved last season that he could play at the NBA level.

“He feels that way too,” Coach Karl said. “Unfortunately, he also realizes that the windows of opportunity aren’t always fair.”
