NBA card sharks

BourreWith training camp looming for all 30 NBA teams, Lakers forward Lamar Odom has planned a summer-ending extravaganza for his co-horts.

Odom is putting on a bourre tournament Sept. 18-20, at Caesars in Las Vegas. Odom has invited and received commitments from a number of NBA players, including Denver’s Allen Iverson. Odom also has invited Michael Jordan to play.

Bourre or as it sometimes is referred to as booray, is a card gambling game that is growing in popularity among the NBA crowd. It’s seen as an alternative to poker.

The game consists of 2-8 players but is most ideal with seven players and typically boring with five or fewer players.

As for myself, I prefer to play bid whist, which is surely old-school and much more challenging and fun than the too-predictable game of spades.

But for serious board-game connoisseurs, no game beats dominoes, which requires skill, strategy and brain power. You have to know how to count in your head.
