Lakers mum (as usual) on Mbenga’s status

August 28th, 2008, 7:33 am · Post a Comment · posted by JANIS CARR, OCREGISTER.COM

DJ MbengaAs promised, an answer to what the Lakers are thinking regarding D.J. Mbenga….

As usual, GM Mitch Kupchak was evasive in his answer.

Kupchak wouldn’t comment on the MiamiHerald.com report that the Lakers have offered the big man a minimum-level deal that would keep him on the roster. The Miami Heat brought in Mbenga for a workout last week and according to the Herald, he was waiting for a “sweeter offer” from the Heat.

“I thought he did a good job last season for us and under the right circumstances we might be interested in keeping him,” Kupchak said.

The Lakers picked up Mbegena off waivers last season after he was released by Golden State. They signed the 7-footer to a 10-day contract and later inked him for the rest of the 2007–08 season. He averaged 2.5 points and 1.6 rebounds.
