Coby KarlLakers guard Coby Karl was in Las Vegas last week participating in the annual Tim Grgurich skills camp.

Asked how Karl looked, a veteran NBA coach responded, “He did what he does best - he made shots.”

Karl, who split the 2007-2008 season playing with the Lakers and their D-League team -  the Los Angeles Defenders, is signed through the 2008-2009 season but it is with a team option that the Lakers have not yet decided to exercise.

Regardless, the competition in training camp for a backup position in the backcourt figures to be tough.

Behind starters Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher are Jordan Farmar and Sasha Vujacic, who are locks to make the team. Battling just to make the team will be Karl, free-agent rookie Dwayne Mitchell, this year’s second-round draft pick Joe Crawford and last year’s second-round draft pick Sun Yue, who is representing China in the Beijing Olympics.
