Kobe and Pau

Kobe Bryant, like his Team USA teammates, hasn’t made it secret that their goal is to win Olympic gold. And it’s no secret the Americans are the overwhelming favorites to take home the top prize.

But not everyone is on board with that. In fact, Bryant’s Lakers’ teammate, Pau Gasol laughed at Bryant’s recent promise to strike gold. Gasol is playing for Spain in the Beijing Olympics.

“Kobe’s funny,” Gasol told a group of reporters in China. “He’s always talking, making those kinds of statements.

“I hope we meet in the gold medal game – then we’ll see.”

The United States, which opens against China, and Spain, which plays Greece in its first game, are in Group B.

“Being the favorite team doesn’t necessarily mean you win gold,” Gasol said.

We’ll see is right.

Who wins in a Spain vs. USA matchup for the gold medal?
