With forward James Posey off the free agent market, the most inviting small forward, still unsigned, is former Laker Devean George, who spent the past seasons with the Dallas Mavericks.
George averaged 5.8 points and 3.3 rebounds in 53 games this past season but is best remembered from the 2007-2008 season for refusing to be included in a blockbuster trade from the Mavericks to the New Jersey Nets, for guard Jason Kidd.
Because of a clause in George’s contract that allowed him to decline to go to the Nets, the trade had to be restructured and Dallas ended up sending to New Jersey forward Keith Van Horn, who unofficially was retired.
George, who spent six seasons with the Lakers, enjoyed his best year in 2003-2004, when he averaged 7.4 points and four rebounds, while playing in all 82 games, 48 of which he started.
Asked Monday if the Lakers had any interest in bringing back George, general manager Mitch Kupchak said, “We have plenty of depth at small forward and that’s not a position that we’d look to add to right now.”
