OK, so it’s only a Summer League game but….
Coby Karl reportedly swatted a shot by Memphis’ O.J. Mayo on one end of floor and threw a perfect alley-oop plass on the other end. He then hit a near-impossible jumper, according to an ESPN.com reporter’s eyewitness account in Las Vegas.
Karl, a 6-foot-5 guard, won’t make anyone forget the Lakers’ other Kobe, but Karl seems to have taken charge of the Lakers’ summer entry. He scored a game-high 16 points as the Lakers handed the Grizzlies their first loss.
Karl is looking to earn more playing time next season and with a strong summer showing, he might just accomplish that. Last season, he saw action in 17 games, averaging 1.2 points in 4.2 minutes a game.
The Lakers’ first-half effort against the Grizzlies was led by Cedric Bozeman (UCLA) with eight points while second-round draft pick Joe Crawford added six.
The Lakers are idle Monday, then return to action against the Philadelphia Sixers on Tuesday.
