NBA draft: Mayo, Westbrook and Love taken in top five picks

June 26th, 2008, 4:56 pm · Post a Comment · posted by TODD HARMONSON, OCREGISTER.COM

USC’s O.J. Mayo didn’t have to wait long today. He was snagged with the No. 3 overall pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves, following the two players everyone expected would go Nos. 1 and 2.

And UCLA guard Russell Westbrook went with the No. 4 pick to Seattle. Then Memphis followed by taking Bruins center Kevin Love at No. 5 to make it three in a row from the rival schools.

Chicago opened the draft by taking Memphis’ Derrick Rose, and Miami decided to stay put at No. 2 and take Kansas State’s Michael Beasley.

There also has been some chatter that the Clippers had tried to get up to No. 4 to take Mayo, but the deal was off when Minnesota ordered Mayo at No. 3.
