Kobe Bryant’s one-game leadership setback

March 30th, 2008, 6:26 pm · Post a Comment · posted by KEVIN DING, OCREGISTER.COM

LOS ANGELES — Kobe Bryant will almost certainly not be posting another season high in points in this game coming up vs. Washington.

Bryant adopted a shoot-first, think-about-the-team-situation-later approach Friday night in the loss to Memphis. Bryant actually shot quite well, but the other Lakers were left a little uncertain about their games given how aggressive he was. It was a topic worth talking over by Bryant, who had one assist in the game and couldn’t get teammates to make clutch shots down the stretch, and Phil Jackson on Saturday.

“We had a discussion yesterday about all the things,” Jackson said. “He has seen it himself in such a way this year and played such great basketball. He has been such a team leader that I just said, ‘You’re going to destroy the relationship you’ve built with the players this year.’ And he said, ‘Naw, it’s not going to affect what we do. I just had to get out and vent what was irritating me about the game and our game.’ So he was obviously irritated by the game prior to that with Charlotte.”

Bryant was ejected from that game against Charlotte. He shot just 8 for 22 from the field in that game, also a Lakers loss.
