Captains: Fish and Kobe

November 9th, 2007, 8:18 pm · 1 Comment · posted by KEVIN DING, OCREGISTER.COM

I mentioned this in my Kobe Bryant column the other day, but I got a response from Phil Jackson just now about Bryant and Derek Fisher being the Lakers’ co-captains for this season.

Jackson said it was totally his decision (many NBA teams hold it to team vote) and close to a no-brainer. Not to be in poor taste, but Jackson said he was “on the john one day” and quite easily finalized it.

“It was pretty gut level of who are the spokesmen for this team and the guys who step up and lead this team as they do,” Jackson said.

Lamar Odom thus loses his slot as a co-captain this season, but Jackson said: “Lamar has a definite leadership role, titular or not. It doesn’t matter to me. He’s definitely a leader on the floor.”

One Response to “Captains: Fish and Kobe”

Makes perfect sense. Plus, Lamar does not look like someone who cares about being named a captain. And Fish probably does a very good job of filling in for the leadership and trust role that Lamar played in the last two seasons.
